Regulations

  1. In ALL classes a published copy of the selection must be provided for the adjudicator.
    Internet copies with appropriate documentation are accepted. PHOTOCOPIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. The published copy must be turned in at the performance venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the class.             
  2. Participants in piano classes must enter EITHER Piano Plan I OR Piano Plan II. Participants entered in either Piano Plan I or II may also enter Local Syllabus Classes.
  3. In own choice Speech Classes a copy of the selection must be submitted to the Festival Secretary with the entry form.
  4. The time and places of performances shall be scheduled at the discretion of the St. Albert Music Festival Association. The order of performance is determined by the local committee and only the committee may alter this order.
  5. All participants must be at the place of performance and be ready to perform at least 15 minutes before the class time.
  6. The St. Albert Rotary Music Festival uses the following grading system:
      90 and over Gold with Distinction Certificate
      85-89 Gold Certificate
      80-84 Silver Certificate
      Below 80 Bronze Certificate
  7. Students entered in Preparatory and Adjudication Only Classes will receive Participation Certificates. No marks will be given for these classes. FOR ADJUDICATION ONLY classes are intended as a workshop experience. Local Syllabus Classes are not eligible for provincial recommendation. 
  8. Grades are based on the total performance in the class.
  9. In classes with “own choice” selections, the quality of material chosen and its suitability to the class will be considered by the adjudicator.
  10. Memorization is encouraged and will be taken into consideration by the adjudicator.

11.  Performance of repeats is at the discretion of the performer.

12.  Performance time which must be included on the entry form refers to the time taken for a complete performance of the selection entered.

13.  A protest cannot be considered unless it is made in writing directly to the local festival within 3 days of the close of the festival, and is accompanied by a $15 fee. The fee will be refunded if the protest is sustained. At no time may anyone other than a festival official discuss the matter with the adjudicator.

14.  Some local festival awards are restricted.

15.  If a solo competitor is unable to perform, no one may take his or her place.

16.  Recorded (tape, CD) accompaniments ARE NOT PERMITTED

17.  Unless otherwise specified, all General Competition Regulations from the Provincial Syllabus published by the Alberta Music Festival Association (AMFA) will apply.

Scholarships

The adjudicators recommend the recipients of all scholarships

Scholarships for all Festival disciplines are provided at the Junior ($100), Intermediate ($150), and
Senior ($200) levels to participants who reside or study in St. Albert or the surrounding municipal districts (not including Edmonton).
Exceptions: Provincial recommendations and Lyle Moore Scholarship have no residence requirement.

Recommendations to the Provincial Festival including the entry fees ($75-Solo / $150-Other) available to any participant. Exception: There are no classes offered at the Provincial Festival for Band or Dance.

Lyle Moore Scholarship ($1000) to continue advanced studies in music open to all participants
(no residence requirement). Enter Lyle Moore Scholarship Class listed in this syllabus.

The Rose Bowl ($500) is awarded to the “Best of the Festival” and is not awarded to the same participant in consecutive years.

Marsha Stanton Award ($350) is awarded to the student who enters a large number of classes in
a variety of disciplines.


Elsie and Bill Filipchuk Musical Theatre Bursary $400

  • Awarded to a student 16 years and under who resides and/or studies in St. Albert and surrounding district, not including Edmonton
  • Paid in the form of tuition to a teacher of the student’s choice
  • Recipient is selected by the adjudicator of the St. Albert Rotary Music Festival
  • The Host Lions Club reserves the right to withhold the scholarship if a suitable candidate is not identified

The Patricia Burgess Prize ($150) 
Sponsored by the Marek Jablonsky Endowment Board, the Patricia Burgess Prize is awarded for the
best performance of Chopin.

Lyle Moore Scholarship Class

CLASS L400 Scholarship of $1000 to continue advanced studies in music 

  • Open to all students (no residence requirements for student or teacher)
  • Candidates must be Advanced Level Music Students aged 16 – 28.
  • Repertoire Selections for ANY solo instrument or voice, may include concerti with a total maximum performance time of 25 minutes. Selection of a concert program displaying a balance of musical styles will be considered by the adjudicators. Repertoire that is not entered in any other Festival class is preferred. 

REGULATIONS

    1. Entry Fee $28
    2. Candidates will be interviewed by the Festival Committee prior to the Festival to obtain a brief biography including musical achievements and goals
    3. Candidates must identify the post secondary institution or individual to which the scholarship of $1000 will be paid
    4. A maximum of 5 candidates will be selected to perform in this class
    5. A panel of adjudicators representing the disciplines of the performers will adjudicate the class
    6. The St. Albert Rotary Music Festival reserves the right to withhold the scholarship unless a
      suitable candidate is identified

Band Classes

Bands may perform a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 selections in Classes 1000-1156 and Classes 1300-1306. Selections listed in the AMFA Syllabus are “suggested selections” and not mandatory.

Time limits have been extended to allow more clinic time with the adjudicator. Times listed are “on stage” times which include performance and adjudication/clinic. In addition a 30 minute warm-up in the warm-up room is provided.

  Classes 1000-1100 (Elementary-Grade I) 45 min.
  Classes 1110-1126, 1160-1166 (Grade II-III) 50 min.
  Classes 1130-1156, 1170-1186 (Grade IV-VI) 60 min.
  Classes 1300-1306 (Stage Band) 60 min.

CLASSROOM CHORAL — WITHOUT INSTRUMENTS – actions optional. Piano may be used as accompaniment. Students in the Adjudication Only Class will receive Participation Certificates.
